PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence police say they seized a record 138 firearms in the city last year, while the number of shootings has decreased slightly.

Police Chief Hugh Clements and Mayor Angel Taveras announced Thursday that 121 of the weapons were handguns and 17 were shotguns and rifles. Several police units confiscated the weapons including narcotics, patrol and the guns and gang task force.

The weapons will be melted down, after police officials confer with the state attorney general’s office.

Police seized 130 firearms in 2012 and 134 in 2011.

The number of shootings in the city, meanwhile, has decreased slightly, from 110 in 2011 to 100 last year.

Taveras says crime overall is down in the capital city.
