AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage is gearing up to deliver his State of the State address to the Democratic-controlled Legislature.

In his speech Tuesday night, the Republican governor is expected to focus on improvements to the economy under his watch, like a dropping unemployment rate, and his administration’s efforts to reform the state’s welfare programs.

Democratic leaders on Monday called on the governor to offer real solutions to create jobs and help the poor. They say the state has only gotten a back a third of the jobs it lost during the recession and that Mainers are still struggling.

LePage’s office says the governor will also discuss his opposition to expanding Medicaid under the federal health care law and ideas to combat the state’s drug problem.
