GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida has hired retired NFL linebacker Mike Peterson to a full-time position on the weight-training staff.

Coach Will Muschamp made the announcement Wednesday, saying Peterson’s experience is “invaluable for our players.”

Peterson spent 14 years in the NFL playing for the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons. He worked as an undergraduate student assistant for Muschamp last season while he finished up his sociology degree. Peterson graduated in December.

Peterson was a First-Team, All-Southeastern Conference selection in 1998 after leading the Gators in tackles (127). The Colts drafted him the second round in 1999 and he spent the next decade-plus racking up tackles and making plays all over the field.

Peterson finished his NFL career with 883 career tackles, 21½ sacks and 19 interceptions in 196 games.
