GAUTIER, Miss. (AP) - The city of Gautier will officially dedicate its new dog park on Friday.

The Bark Park, located in Shepard State Park, has been open several weeks.

Gautier Mayor Gordon Gollott told The Sun Herald (https://bit.ly/1fHkEx3 ) that he’s been surprised with the high traffic use the park has received so far.

In September, a group of third-grade students from Martin Bluff Elementary asked the city for a favor. They wanted a dog park somewhere in the city so residents can play with their pets.

The students even presented the city council with $65 they raised from a lemonade stand to go toward the construction of the park. Gollott said Ingalls Shipbuilding helped with the project.

“It’s providing an opportunity for recreation for people who have dogs in the city to enjoy time with their pets,” Gollott said.

Jenny Flint of Gautier took her dog, Jack, to the park on Tuesday for the first time.

“It’s nice to have this,” she said. “He’s not a very active dog and I’m trying to get him to lose weight and get some exercise.”
