STERLING, Ill. (AP) - Firefighters who put out a blaze in an abandoned western Illinois apartment building found a man’s body in the rubble.

Mike Dettman is deputy fire chief in Sterling. He says the man has not been identified and is believed to have been homeless. He says no utilities were working in the building.

Dettman says firefighters were called to the scene at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, and it took about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Police say the man’s body was found on the second floor of the three-story building.

Sauk Valley Media reports that (https://tinyurl.com/l3z9sja ) the state fire marshal’s office is investigating.

Dettman says an autopsy is being performed. A message left with the Whiteside County coroner’s office was not immediately returned Tuesday.
