OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - The City of Ocean Springs is facing a May 31 deadline to use Community Development Block Grant money to construct a public parking lot.

Bids for the 60-to-70 space parking project were opened Jan. 15 but were over budget.

Mayor Connie Moran tells The Mississippi Press (https://bit.ly/1brxBX6) there were elements in the original scope of the project, such as lighting, which will have to be scaled back to keep bids within budget.

Moran says the city has to try to make it useable, even if that means putting gravel down so people can park there.

The property was purchased from the Fallo family by the city nearly three years ago for $286,000.

The city has some $100,000 remaining in grant funds which it can use for the parking lot.
