JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Alaska Senator Mark Begich, D-Alaska, has amended the Postal Reform Act of 2014 placing Douglas and Auke Bay on the list of protected rural post offices.

The Juneau Empire reports (https://bit.ly/1eakdXj ) the move places a one-year moratorium on closing any rural post offices in Alaska.

Once the moratorium is lifted, the Postal Service has to prove a location meets a set of four criteria before the hours are reduced or the closure is approved.

Douglas, Auke Bay and other rural post offices around Alaska will see rates on packages weighing more than 50 pounds dropping back down to original rates. Those rates were raised Jan. 26.
