FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) - A weekend workshop in northwest Alabama aims to help volunteer fire departments recruit and keep new members.

Dozens of firefighters from Alabama, Florida and Tennessee are gathering at the University of North Alabama for a two-day seminar on recruiting and retaining members.

Adam McCanless of the Lauderdale County Volunteer Firefighters Association tells WAAY-TV (https://bit.ly/1o2J7AK ) that departments nationwide are struggling with membership.

He says the typical service of a volunteer firefighter is less than five years, and it’s hard to keep members interested.

More than 50 firefighters are expected to attend the workshop, which is free because of a federal grant. The last session is Sunday.
