EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The Mesker Park Zoo’s baby Colobus monkey is receiving plenty of attention from his mother.

The newborn name Malachite - or “Mally” for short - made his public debut Monday after being born Nov. 30.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (https://bit.ly/1fsO7gr ) Mally’s mother, Garnet, seemed to understood the significance of the moment because as soon as a door opened, she carried him up to a fence and presented him for a crowd to see.

Zookeeper Jessa McCauley says the first-time mother keeps Mally close and reels him in when he strays too far.

Zookeeper Katie Alexander says Garnet also carries the baby indoors whenever he gets cold.

Mally is the first Colobus monkey born at the Evansville zoo since Garnet’s birth in 2009.

Colobus monkeys are native to Africa.
