ROY, Utah (AP) - Officials are hailing a Roy police officer as a hero for pulling a man from the basement of a burning house shortly before the first level of the structure exploded.

KSL reports (https://bit.ly/1ajvzYu ) Kyle Christensen entered the home Saturday night, found the man in the basement and pulled him out with the help of another officer.

Roy Fire Chief Jason Poulsen says the man’s mother got out of the house but told officers she was unable to help her son in the basement.

Christensen was among the first people to respond to the scene, and he says he could hear ammunition going off because of the fire. Poulsen says the first level exploded shortly after the rescue.

The station reports the man suffered second- and third-degree burns.
