PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A committee that sifted through nearly 10,000 suggestions for the name of Portland’s new bridge across the Willamette River has released a list of four finalists - Cascadia Crossing, Tillicum Crossing, Wy’east and Abigail Scott Duniway, who fought for women’s voting rights.

The committee chose names that have historical or geographical significance and bypassed whimsical suggestions that had public support, such as the Lisa Simpson Bridge. It also opted against naming it for popular Portlanders who recently died, including famed door-to-door salesman Bill Porter and street musician Kirk Reeves.

The bridge scheduled to open in September 2015 will carry light rail, streetcars, buses, bikes and pedestrians. It will be off-limits to private vehicles.

Transit officials say it will be the only one of its kind in the United States.
