WEST MONROE, La. (AP) - The state Department of Motor Vehicles will offer a special license plate to benefit West Monroe High School.

The News-Star reported (https://tnsne.ws/1m4Xwva) the official Louisiana license will bear the red and blue “WM,” a symbol of the high school.

The plate will be one of more than 200 specialized plates offered in Louisiana and will go on sale the week of Jan 20.

West Monroe High School graduate Hamilton Winters said he came up with the idea for a school license plate in July 2012. Winters now attend the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

“I knew they had to have an impact on these organizations financially,” Winters said. “It’s kind of like having a driving billboard in terms of publicity, but the organization reaps the monetary rewards.”

Specialized plates require approval of the Legislature.

The West Monroe High proposal was led by Sen. Mike Walsworth, R-West Monroe.

West Monroe principal Shere May said she’s grateful for Walsworth’s support. “We appreciate him for making this a priority and not pushing us in the corner,” she said.

The plates will be sold at the West Monroe office of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Each plate will cost an additional $25 per year above the normal license cost, with the extra fee going to the school.

May the proceeds will be used be used to for classroom activities and to recognize academic achievement at West Monroe High.

“I think the community is going to be really excited and once again very supportive of WMHS,” she said. “We believe this will be a great source of revenue for the school for years to come.”

Walsworth said the plates bearing the numbers 1 through 9 will be held out of the pool available through general registration and will be auctioned off to benefit the Boys & Girls Club.
