NEW YORK (AP) - Weekday ferry service has been extended between the Rockaways in Queens and Lower Manhattan.

The ferries had been slated to end on Jan. 31.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday that they’re being extended until May, with an option to extend until August.

The ferries also stop in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

The service began in November as an emergency measure, after Superstorm Sandy devastated other public transit options.

It’s carried more than 200,000 passengers since then. Proponents say it offers a fast, reliable and affordable alternative for commuters.
