PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Food distributions to the needy are up in Pierre.

The Capital Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1kQgJCS ) that Pierre Food Bank of Feeding South Dakota distributed nearly 1.4 million pounds of food last year. That’s an increase of 50 percent.

Feeding South Dakota spokesman Russ Hofeldt says the increase is mostly due to the success of the mobile food pantry. The program has provided more than 371,000 meals to needy families since its inception a year ago.

Officials say one of the major issues in fighting hunger is limited access to food, and the mobile food pantry is an attempt to address that.
