HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is elevating a high-ranking state energy official to commissioner.

Malloy announced Thursday he’s appointing Robert Klee, who has been chief of staff since 2011. He will succeed Commissioner Daniel Esty, who announced last week he was resigning to teach at Yale, which gave him a three-year leave.

Klee holds a law degree and a Ph.D. from Yale’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies in industrial ecology.

Malloy cited Klee’s work as chief of staff for the agency, which he said has given him a strong familiarity with the agency’s energy and environmental programs.

Esty was the first commissioner of the agency merged in 2011 to oversee energy and environmental policy.
