DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit fourth-grader took on a new role at least for one day.

Police chief.

The 9-year-old who has always wanted to be a Detroit officer was made “Chief for a Day” in a ceremony Friday.

Jayvon Felton’s temporary appointment came nine months after he was diagnosed with leukemia.

Chief Jayvon’s new gig was coordinated by police Capt. Darwin Roche and the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Every-other-day Detroit Chief James Craig says Jayvon’s trip to police headquarters Friday “reminds us … how important every precious moment is.”

Wearing a blue S.W.A.T. uniform, Jayvon arrived by helicopter and was greeted by classmates from Roberto Clemente Academy, police dogs and mascots that included the Detroit Tigers’ Paws.

Jayvon smiled as Craig administered the oath of office.
