MANDAN, N.D. (AP) - A former Mandan teacher accused of giving two teenage girls a sexually explicit book he had written has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges.

Forty-five-year-old Scott Allan allegedly gave the 17- and 18-year-old girls the book as a graduation gift. Characters in the book allegedly were based on the girls.

Allan resigned May 22, hours after school officials had placed him on administrative leave. He appeared in court on Monday and pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of promoting obscenity to minors and a misdemeanor disorderly conduct count.

His trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 30. He could face more than five years in prison if convicted.
