MARION, Ill. (AP) - Illinois State Police suspect excessive speed played a role in a three-car wreck that killed three people in southern Illinois’ Williamson County.

Authorities have not released the names of the victims of the wreck about 9:30 p.m. Monday on Illinois Route 13.

Investigators say a Pontiac Firebird and a Porsche were westbound on the highway when a Toyota Scion entered their paths. Watson says the Pontiac then hit the Toyota and caught fire.

Watson says the driver of the Porsche managed to avoid the other two cars but slid into Crab Orchard Lake.

Police say a fourth person was hospitalized in critical condition.

The highway reopened to traffic about 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The investigation continues.
