LAS VEGAS (AP) - The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch as heavy rains come down in the Las Vegas valley and other desert areas of Southern California and Arizona.

The watch took effect at 11 a.m. Thursday and runs until 9 p.m. Thursday.

It includes Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Red Rock Canyon and greater Las Vegas, among other places.

Fire officials warn people to stay out of washes and detention basins, which can fill quickly and with little warning.

Southern Nevada has entered into monsoon season, which runs from July to August and includes rain and thunderstorms.
