WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A former Brunswick County sheriff is in trouble with the law again.

The U.S. Department of Justice says Ronald Hewett is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon after federal agents said they found multiple firearms at his home in Supply on Wednesday.

Hewett pleaded guilty in 2008 to one count of obstruction of justice and was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

The former sheriff faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if he is convicted on the firearms charge.

Justice Department spokesman Don Connelly says Hewett doesn’t have a lawyer at this time. Hewett made his initial court appearance on the firearms charge Thursday.
