JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Juneau police are warning residents of an apparent telephone scam.

Police say they received several reports from residents and businesses on Wednesday describing a caller who claimed to be a representative of the local utility, Alaska Electric Light and Power. The caller said the person’s electric bill was overdue, demanded immediate payment and suggested the individuals buy a pre-paid debit card and provide the card’s information over the phone.

The police, in a release, said utilities, banks and similar businesses don’t make such demands.
