NEW YORK (AP) - Police say an officer reassigned to Brooklyn as part of the city’s Summer All Out campaign shot a suspect who rammed a department vehicle.

They say Officer James Hasper hit Raymond Martinez in the shoulder as he tried to flee a car stop around 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Canarsie.

The 46-year-old Martinez was taken to Brookdale Hospital.

Police say gang squad members stopped Martinez after he sped through a red light and hit several parked cars.

They say Hasper was reporting to work at the 69th Precinct and ran to help when he saw Martinez ram the police vehicle.

Police say Hasper normally works in the department’s barricade unit.

The department recently reassigned 313 officers to man foot patrols in high crime neighborhoods.

They say Martinez has 12 prior arrests.
