WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - A Waterloo man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of a woman who was the mother of his young child.

Shaun Michael Hogan, 36, was taken into custody in connection with the death of 29-year-old Crystal Marie Gaffney, according to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. He is being held without bond at the county jail and is expected to make his first court appearance Friday.

Hogan was taken in for questioning earlier in the day following a public plea from authorities for information on his whereabouts.

Gaffney, also of Waterloo, was found Wednesday morning in the middle of a rural road near Walker in Linn County. An autopsy Thursday confirmed her identification, after authorities immediately called her death suspicious.

Gaffney died as a result of head trauma, according to the state medical examiner’s office. Additional details were not provided.

The sheriff’s office said Gaffney is the mother of three girls who were the subject of a brief Wednesday night Amber Alert. They were found safe a short time later in the Waterloo area, though information about their conditions was not released.

Hogan and Gaffney are the parents of a young child, but it was unclear if that child was one of the children under the Amber Alert. Authorities said Hogan was involved in the Amber Alert, but additional information was not released.
