NORTH CREEK, N.Y. (AP) - The National Weather Service has confirmed that five tornados touched down in upstate New York during severe storms that killed four people.

The worst devastation Tuesday was in the town of Smithfield, between Utica and Syracuse. Four people were killed and several homes were destroyed or damaged.

Meteorologists say twisters also touched down Tuesday evening in the hamlet of North Creek in the Adirondacks, in Lowville east of the Tug Hill Plateau, in Deerfield south of Utica and in New London, just west of Rome.

Dozens of trees and power lines were knocked down in those areas.
