KENTWOOD, Mich. (AP) - The American Red Cross of West Michigan is closing a shelter that was set up after severe weather including a tornado hit near Grand Rapids.

The Red Cross says the shelter at the Kentwood Activities Center will close at midday Friday, but disaster recovery supplies will continue to be distributed from the site through Sunday. The hours for distribution of supplies are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm last Sunday spawned a tornado with winds reaching the 100-110 mph range in Kent County, causing significant damage to homes in Kentwood, and damage was reported elsewhere. Kent County officials say hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged.

A weaker tornado touched down near Ionia early Monday. Some damage was reported to trees, crops and farm buildings.
