A CORUNA, Spain (AP) - Deportivo La Coruna has hired former Zaragoza coach Victor Fernandez ahead of its return to Spanish topflight football.

Fernandez signed a one-year deal to head the Galician outfit, which sacked coach Fernando Vazquez soon after achieving promotion. Despite a second-place finish, Vazquez was fired following critical remarks over Deportivo’s transfer policy.

Fernandez guided Zaragoza to a 2-1 victory over Arsenal for the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1995 after Zaragoza won the Copa del Rey the previous season.

The 53-year-old Fernandez, who had been working as a TV pundit in recent years, also had coaching stints at Real Betis, Gent and FC Porto.
