NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans Police Department detective is charged with attempted second-degree murder and simple battery, stemming from allegations of domestic abuse.

The department said Friday that Detective Robert Hurst has been suspended as a result of the charges. The case was investigated by the department’s Public Integrity Bureau.

Hurst is a 10-year veteran of the department. He is charged in a bill of information filed by the Orleans Parish district attorney.

His attorney, Eric Hessler, tells The New Orleans Advocate (https://bit.ly/1oOAUQE ) that the charges are baseless and were made by an ex-girlfriend. Hessler says Hurst was told to turn himself in at the criminal courthouse on Monday.
