TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida has more than 1,400 new foster homes.

The Florida Department of Children and Families said Friday that it’s added 1,463 new foster homes in the past year. There are only 291 more foster homes overall compared to last year. That’s because many foster homes don’t renew or lose their license for various reasons. The state has a total of 4,678 licensed foster care providers.

ChildNet Inc., the foster care contractor for the state in Broward and Palm Beach counties, added a combined total of 282 new foster homes this past fiscal year.

DCF’s Interim Secretary Mike Carroll credited private contractors around the state with recruiting, licensing and matching foster parents with children in need of short and long-term homes.
