RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (AP) - Divers searching for a 19-year-old man believed to have drowned at a rocky ocean cove near Los Angeles failed to find his body for a second day Thursday.

An eight-hour search turned up nothing at Abalone Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

More than a dozen divers were expected to resume the hunt for Joseph Sanchez on Friday.

Friends of the Long Beach man told authorities they were jumping into the churning water to explore a cave when he started yelling for help Wednesday afternoon.

The water was too rough for them to reach him.

Toogee Zepeda, one of the people who was in the water with the man, said a friend threw the man a rope, but he was unable to grab it.

The area has dangerous waves and riptides but online videos of people jumping off rocks there have increased its popularity.

Authorities say lifeguards have made more than 50 rescues in the general area since July 1.
