HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say two children have drowned in a Michigan pond.

According to a news release from the Gratiot County sheriff’s office, the boys were pronounced dead at the scene Thursday.

Deputies and rescue crews were called to a home in Hamilton Township near the mid-Michigan community of Ashley. They were asked to help find two missing toddlers.

The sheriff’s department says deputies found footprints leading to the pond and saw the two boys underwater.

Sheriff’s Lt. Roy McCollum tells The Saginaw News “a tragedy doesn’t even begin to describe” the deaths of the 2- and 3-year-old boys.

The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant says sheriff’s officials have not released the name of the children.

Hamilton Township is about 30 miles north of Lansing and 90 miles northwest of Detroit.
