CHELMSFORD, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say the pilot of small plane has made a safe emergency landing on an athletic field at Chelmsford High School northwest of Boston.

Chelmsford police said the Cessna 182Q had taken off from Minute Man Air Field in Stow on Friday afternoon and was returning there when an engine problem forced the pilot to land just after 4 p.m.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Simpson in Boston said the plane was part of the volunteer Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The male pilot was the only one aboard and wasn’t hurt. Police said no fuel leaked and there was no environmental damage.

Television images from the scene show the plane upright on a large grassy area just off Graniteville Road.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
