CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A former Albemarle County court clerk has pleaded guilty to embezzling as much as $14,000 from the office.

The Daily Progress reports (https://bit.ly/1oQVqjA ) that Dayna T. Awkward pleaded guilty Friday. Sentencing is set for Oct. 24.

Awkward worked in the circuit court clerk’s office for 24 years. She resigned in March as authorities began a criminal investigation into financial discrepancies in civil case transactions. According to investigators, Awkward pocketed cash payments and altered records to try to avoid being caught.

Assistant Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney David Stock, who acted as special prosecutor, said about 180 files were altered.
