FULTON, N.Y. (AP) - A central New York police sergeant has been accused of assaulting a man in custody and then writing a false report to cover up the attack.

The Fulton Police Department tells local media that 18-year veteran Sgt. Joseph Arigo faces misdemeanor charges of third-degree assault, falsifying business records and making a punishable false written statement.

Authorities say Arigo hit the man repeatedly on the head and face at the police station on June 28. The victim was bruised and swollen and had a one-inch cut over his right eye that took seven stitches.

A city court official said Arigo didn’t enter a plea during a court appearance Friday and didn’t have a lawyer on record. Arigo has been suspended with pay and is due back in court on Aug. 13.
