POCAHONTAS, Va. (AP) - Construction is underway on a 30-mile segment of the new Spearhead Trail project in Tazewell County.

County Administrator Jim Spencer tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (https://bit.ly/1npwQXJ ) the project is about half finished.

The segment between Boissevain and Pocahontas will bring the Virginia-side trail system within reach of the neighboring West Virginia-based Hatfield-McCoy trail system, creating a two-state tourism link for the region. The trail will be open to all-terrain vehicles, bikes, horses, hikers and others.

The Southwest Virginia Regional Recreational Authority will operate the trail, which ultimately will extend through seven southwest Virginia counties. The first section opened last year in Wise County.
