WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A caller describes erratic behavior or a possible suicide attempt by an inmate in a call to emergency dispatchers from the New Hanover County jail where former Brunswick County Sheriff Ronald Hewett died last weekend.

Authorities on Monday released 911 recordings made about the time of Hewett’s death. Hewett died Saturday while being held on a federal firearms charge.

New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon said Monday that Hewitt was being taken from his cell for a visit with family members when there was an altercation. McMahon did not provide additional details.

In the 911 call Saturday afternoon, the caller mentioned a patient with psychiatric or abnormal behavior or a possible suicide attempt at the jail. A short time later, the EMS unit indicated the patient had died.
