MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - Bail was set at $5,000 for a 37-year-old man charged with jumping off a bridge into the Clark Fork River east of Missoula and landing on another man, knocking him unconscious.

Charles David Ament was charged with misdemeanor negligent endangerment during a hearing in Justice Court on Monday.

Prosecutors say he did a handstand on the bridge railing and fell into the water Saturday evening. His leg struck the head of another man who had just jumped in. Other swimmers carried the unconscious man to the river bank, where he regained consciousness. The injured man needed staples to close the cut on his head.

Ament also is charged with violating his probation on a felony drug charge by drinking alcohol.

Both Ament and the victim said they saw signs that said jumping from the bridge is illegal.
