NEW ROADS, La. (AP) - The Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who drowned in False River as 19-year-old Marlon Sharper of Morganza.

Capt. Steve Juge tells The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1wpunNH ) Sharper fell into the south end of False River near the old Bonaventure Boat Landing on La. Highway 1, not far from the community of Oscar at about 5 p.m. Monday.

Juge says Sharper worked at a cafe near the boat landing.

He says Sharper’s brother went to their truck and when he turned around, he saw Sharper in the water. They are unsure how he got in the water.

Investigators were told that Sharper did not know how to swim.

Juge says the body was found off the pier at the landing.
