BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The director of the State Historical Society of North Dakota has announced his retirement.

Merl Paaverud (PAH’-vur-ood) told the 12-member State Historical Society board last week of his plans to retire on Nov. 14.

Paaverud was appointed director in 2001.

Paaverud tells the Bismarck Tribune (https://bit.ly/1kYNXuT ) that his departure will come after the official grand opening of the renovated Heritage Center on the state Capitol grounds.

The $51.7 million, 97,000-square-foot expansion is to be ready for the Nov. 2 grand opening to mark North Dakota’s 125th anniversary.
