YORK, S.C. (AP) - A 68-year-old man who shot and killed his 9-year-old granddaughter and bedridden wife because he didn’t want them to live without him has been sentenced to life in prison.

Ronald Gregory pleaded guilty but mentally ill Monday to two counts of murder in the shootings at his Rock Hill home in March.

Prosecutors say Gregory’s wife died instantly. But they say the girl, Mia Rodgers, lived for an hour after she was shot with her grandfather sitting nearby. Prosecutor Kevin Brackett says some of the girl’s last words were “Paw Paw, when am I going to stop hurting?”

About nine hours after the killings, Brackett says Gregory called 911 and shot himself twice in the chest. He survived.

Gregory said little in court and did not apologize.
