MIAMI (AP) - A man who shot and killed a Miami police officer 26 years ago has avoided the death penalty as part of a plea deal.

Under the agreement reached Wednesday, 54-year-old Dennis Escobar will end his prison time in Florida, but he will now serve a life sentence in California for trying to shoot state troopers there during his arrest.

Escobar and his brother were convicted in 1991 of murdering Officer Victor Estefan, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop in March 1988. The Miami Herald (https://goo.gl/SrjUk5 ) reports that the state supreme court later overturned the conviction.

Prosecutors say Escobar confessed to shooting Estefan, dumping the weapon in a canal and fleeing to California with his brother.
