GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - Campbell County has proposed a deal that would pay SkyWest Airlines up to $3.5 million a year to provide jet service to Gillette from Salt Lake City and Denver.

The Gillette News-Record reports (https://tinyurl.com/orrda6v ) the contract offered Tuesday would bring two daily flights from Denver and one from Salt Lake.

It would also replace the current turboprop service with jets, which the commissioners say would be more reliable.

Officials say the state would pay about $1.5 million of the subsidy, and the city of Gillette has verbally committed to pay $350,000. The county would pay the rest.

The county’s share could be less depending on how many passengers book flights.

The proposal would allow the county to negotiate ticket prices with SkyWest, and flights would start by April 15.
