ELGIN, Ill. (AP) - Elgin authorities have recaptured a prisoner who escaped while being transported from a mental health facility outside Chicago to a court hearing.

Authorities say Jesse Vega managed to escape from a transport vehicle Wednesday morning as he was being taken from the Elgin Mental Health Center to the Lake County courthouse in Waukegan. The 33-year-old Vega is facing numerous domestic battery charges.

Elgin Police Chief Swoboda thanked people who shared the department’s Facebook post about the escaped prisoner. He said it was “the community’s input and all of you on social media that’s really helped today.” Authorities haven’t released details of Vega’s capture.

Lake County state’s attorney spokeswoman Cynthia Trujillo-Vargas says Vega was scheduled for a fitness hearing to see if he was mentally fit to stand trial.
