PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Police say large fireworks might be to blame for a hole left in the roof of a Peoria home.

The (Peoria) Journal-Star reports Wednesday (https://bit.ly/1jyFDXE ) that neighbors of the northwest-side house approached a Peoria County Sheriff’s deputy after seeing a bright flash and hearing an explosion above the elderly woman’s home.

The resident was inside but unharmed.

She told police she had just turned off the lights and gone to her bedroom at 11:12 p.m. Saturday when she saw a flash and heard a boom. She found a large, jagged hole in the ceiling above her head.

Police say the metal roofing was bent inward and they found loose cardboard consistent with large fireworks.

The explosion caused $1,000 in damage.

Police are conducting a criminal investigation.
