PERU, Ind. (AP) - The tankers of the 434th Air Refueling Wing have begun returning to Grissom Air Reserve Base in northern Indiana after the refurbishing of a runway.

Wing Commander Col. Doug Schwartz says the 15 KC-135R Stratotankers that were temporarily redeployed to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, began returning to Grissom on Wednesday.

The base says in a news release the runway reopened Wednesday morning, and the first aircraft to use the renovated runway was a Boeing 757 arriving for painting at a nearby business.

The $3.2 million runway project began June 1 at the base about 60 miles north of Indianapolis.
