BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A Fort Madison man has been formally charged with first-degree murder in the June death of a Burlington man.

Lt. Jeff Klein with the Burlington Police Department says the recent charge for 42-year-old Lenard Polhans came after a 45-day wait period. Court records show he has pleaded not guilty.

Polhans is accused of fatally shooting 35-year-old Marvin Sutton on June 1. Authorities say the men were arguing in Sutton’s backyard prior to the shooting.

Klein tells the Fort Madison Daily Democrat (https://bit.ly/UaRlLY ) that authorities are still investigating a motive. Polhans remains at the Des Moines County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
