RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The public now has a chance to comment on proposed rules for regulating oil and gas development in North Carolina.

Officials with the state Mining and Energy Commission are seeking public input and have opened a comment period which lasts until Sept. 15.

Written comments from the public will be accepted at three public hearings and may also be submitted at any time during the comment period. The written comments may also be submitted electronically through the state Division of Energy, Mineral and Land Resources website.

Gov. Pat McCrory in June signed into law the Energy Modernization Act, which further refines previous legislation to allow companies to extract oil and gas from the ground by injecting high-pressure mixtures into rock.
