SAN ANTONIO (AP) - San Antonio Police Chief William McManus is retiring after 8½ years as the Alamo City’s top cop.

In a statement, City Manager Sheryl Sculley said McManus will remain as police chief until the end of the calendar year, then leave to become senior director of security for city-owned CPS Energy. The San Antonio electric and natural gas utility is the nation’s largest municipally owned energy utility and serves a 1,514-square-mile area that includes Bexar County and parts of Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina, and Wilson counties.

Now 62, McManus has worked in law enforcement since joining the Washington, D.C., police force in 1975. After rising to assistant police chief there, he served as police chief in Dayton, Ohio, and Minneapolis. He took the San Antonio job in 2006.
