PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed’s chief of staff is joining the Obama administration as an adviser at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The appointment of Tom Coderre (koh-DARE’) was announced Wednesday. He will serve as senior adviser to the head of the agency, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Coderre will work on policy issues including substance abuse prevention, treatment and recovery. He will work with the White House on the national drug control and HIV and AIDS strategies.

Coderre has been Paiva Weed’s chief of staff since 2009. He served in the Rhode Island Senate from 1995 to 2003.

He’s active in addiction recovery groups locally and nationally and served as national field director of the Washington-based Faces & Voices of Recovery.
