RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A preliminary budget approved by Pennington County commissioners includes $500,000 to hire more deputies in the sheriff’s department.

Sheriff Kevin Thom says the department needs more officers to reduce long response times in the 100-mile-long county.

The Rapid City Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1oHZdwM) that the plan would add 13 deputies in 2015. The sheriff’s office currently has 78 certified law enforcement officers.

The final budget will be approved in September.
