NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - Authorities say a man suspected of beating his wife shot himself inside a North Platte home as officers closed in.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says the shooting occurred late Tuesday night at the Patriot Mobile Home Park. Officers who were sent there to check on a disturbance discovered a woman who was bleeding from her head. She said her husband had kicked her and beaten her with a lamp. He’d fled.

Officers later were tipped that the man had returned to the home. As officers converged on the front of the home, they heard a gunshot from inside. They say they soon found the suspect, who’d shot himself.

He was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
